There’s something wildly romantic about doing things your own way — especially when it comes to weddings. L & N did just that. They kicked off their marriage journey in July with an intimate elopement at the Santa Barbara Courthouse (arguably one of California’s most beautiful buildings), and followed it up in August with a dreamy lakefront celebration at the Lodge at Malibou Lake. Two very different vibes, both very them.
Part 1: Eloping Under Arches and Spanish Tiles
Santa Barbara Courthouse is the kind of place where you can whisper your vows under a canopy of bougainvillea, then walk through Moorish archways like you’re in a 1930s movie. It’s pure magic.
L & N brought their closest family for the ceremony — no fuss, no distractions, just a beautiful morning full of tears, laughter, and the kind of eye contact that says, “We really mean this.”
As a photographer, I love courthouse weddings because they strip things down to the essence. It’s all about the connection, the light, the architecture. But let me tell you, shooting at the Santa Barbara Courthouse is a dream and a challenge. The light bounces between creamy walls, arches frame every shot like a Renaissance painting, and the textures are straight out of a design magazine. But you gotta move quick — there’s always another wedding 10 minutes away.
Pro tip: If you’re dreaming of doing the same, arrive early and plan portraits around the ceremony slot. That tile staircase and sunken garden? They’re worth it.
Part 2: Dancing with the Trees at Malibou Lake Lodge
A month later, L & N brought the celebration to the hills — and this time, everyone was invited. The Lodge at Malibou Lake is tucked away in Agoura Hills, a hidden gem with lake views, wild trees, and the kind of laid-back luxury that makes you want to stay forever. The vibe was elegant but unfussy: long tables under string lights, pastel florals spilling out of vases, barefoot dancing, lake reflections. Think European garden party meets California cool.
One of my favorite moments? The two of them sneaking off to the dock as the sun started to dip behind the trees. There’s something about the quiet just before golden hour, when the water goes glassy and the world hushes for a second. It was poetic. And yes, I totally made them dance on the dock.
Why Two Events Might Be the Sweet Spot
This two-part structure is honestly genius. You get:
- A stress-free, deeply personal ceremony where you can focus on what matters.
- Space to be present instead of overwhelmed by timelines.
- Two wildly different sets of photos (hello variety).
- Flexibility if you have family abroad, schedule chaos, or just want to savor each moment fully.
If you’re someone who loves both intimacy and celebration, this is your sign. You don’t have to choose. L & N’s wedding was proof that when you follow your heart (and maybe a little Google Maps), you end up somewhere really beautiful.
